Explore on a Day Trip

Within easy reach for a day trip are some of the UK's most iconic locations and a few that may surprise you.

York

42 miles

Pack your walking shoes for a day spent exploring York's lanes, alleys, ginnels and snickleways (yes, that's a real word), history is literally laid before you at every turn.

Independent shops and cafe's thrive in this vibrant university city with its historic Minster that towers above the ancient streets.

We recommend you let the bus take the strain for the final stretch by using the Park & Ride located on the outskirts of the city.

Top Tip - For a birds eye view of York, take the option to climb the 275 steps up Central Tower in York Minster. You'll need to be reasonably fit but the reward is a breathtaking view of both the interior of the Minster as you ascend and the city spread out before you once you reach the top.

Osbourne's @ 68 - cafe with a quiet garden oasis.

Castle Howard

36 miles

Castle Howard - English stately home near the city of York.

There are few estates in the UK as magnificent as Castle Howard and a visit to the house, gardens and extensive grounds is an absolute must. Film directors have been in love with the location for many years, making it the setting for Bridehead Revisited and more recently, Bridgerton.

A treetop adventure playground will intrigue younger visitors. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Top Tip - Look out for the summer outdoor music events which range from Ibiza house to Proms in the Park complete with firework display.

Whitby

37 miles

The harbour town of Whitby has a completely unique appeal with it's ruined abbey standing guard over the busy port and bustling narrow streets.  It was in this town with it's rich seafaring history that the young Captain James Cook learned his trade.

Perhaps on a more sinister note, Whitby was the holiday destination of the author Bram Stoker who took inspiration from the setting as he started writing his novel, Dracula. Even today, the legend attracts many visitors interested in walking in Dracula's shoes.

We couldn't mention Whitby without recommending The Magpie Cafe - just ask Rick Stein, this is fish & chips at their very best!

Top Tip - Walk the three miles along the Blue Flag beach from Whitby to Sandsend. Before you head back, enjoy a well deserved rest and spot of lunch at The Hart Inn

Hull

30 miles

The historic city of Hull has undergone a rebirth in recent years, including being the City of Culture in 2017 and is a great day out.   The area stretching from the Old Town with it's Georgian buildings to the renovated docks is home to many independent cafes, shops and restaurants.

Top Tip - The Deep is one of the UK's largest aquariums. This charitable operations has it's focus firmly on conservation and education.  Since opening it has won numerous tourism awards and rightly so - there is an abundance of sealife to meet including sharks, turtles, rays and penguins! The building itself is pretty cool too.
